A 49-year-old US tourist who had been reported missing for more than a week was found dead Saturday in a Cancun hotel room, according to Mexico’s attorney general’s office.

Elka Stoyanova, a McLean, Virginia, woman, had been reported missing by her husband since June 13. The couple was in Cancun on vacation.

A hotel security guard discovered her body at about 7:15 a.m. in a room at the Hotel San Jose del Cabo in the city’s tourist district. Stoyanova had been beaten to death, according to a statement from the attorney general’s office.

No arrests have been made and no additional details were provided by authorities.

The hotel has been cooperating with authorities, said the statement, which also thanked the public for its help in their investigation.

Stoyanova worked as an environmental consultant and had headed south for a week to take in the sights and culture of the Caribbean coast destination.
